Project title
Kirkby-in-Furness Down
Project background
Rails have a service life and wear out, fracture or warp etc. The project aim is to replace 388yds of running rails on one of the two sets of track at the location, which includes a small viaduct over a tidal channel known as Kirkby Pool. The rails are unclipped and lifted out/lifted back in by a 360 excavator machine running on the other set of rails. It's a simple task but to save disruption to the railway the task will be completed on Sunday nights (when there are no trains running) over several weeks.
