Project description

Walney Island Causeway Remedials
FP601036 connects Barrow in Furness with Walney Island along a causeway which was built by the Broughton Estate in the first half of the 20th century to carry its workers across Walney Channel. It is now in a state of disrepair in various sections due to years of neglect by the estate, as the local highway authority we have a duty to maintain some structures carrying public rights of way in order to make them safe/good. As this footpath is evidenced to still get used by a number of locals and tourists we intend to carry out the remedials. In order to do this we propose to carry out works to the attached drawing 601036/01/Rev0. These works would include pre-fabricating 4 x reinforced concrete posts and 1 x 6ft x3ft concrete slab and storing them close off site until low tide so they can be installed at the appropriate time. If this section of the path is successfully completed we would then look to improve the full route throughout.
The contractor shall be provided with tide times for appropriate working hours. The remedial works will be split into 2 days due to the only available working hours being at low tide, approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes of working time. On the first day the existing concrete slab will be removed from site and the new concrete posts will be set into place. On the second day the new concrete slab will be set onto the new posts. To carry out this work we will need to have a pickup and trailer with a 3.5T digger with a minimum carrying capacity of 1T. We do not currently have any dates for this work but this can be arranged at a later date. Access to and from site can be seen in the attached location plan.
