Project title
Mersey Channel and River Maintenance Dredge Disposal Renewal
Project background
The Mersey Docks and Harbour Company Ltd, as the Harbour Authority for the Port of Liverpool has an obligation to dredge the approaches to Liverpool in order to maintain navigation into the Mersey Estuary for all river users.
As SHA, the activity of dredging within the jurisdiction of MDHC is exempt from the requirement for a Marine Licence under Section 75 of the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009 (as amended) (MCAA 2009).
This licence is for the disposal only of that material to four designated disposal sites:
Mersey Mid river (IS120)
Mersey of Bromborough 2 (IS128)
Site Z (IS140)
Site Y (IS150).
Working on the basis of a 10 year licence duration. The material to be removed comprises of sand (62.5um – 2mm) and silt (31.25 – 62.5um); which has accreted within channels.
Programme of works
The dredging would take place on two campaigns a year.
