Project description

CBC1/W670350 Nethertown - St Bees Sea Walls
CBC1 W670350 Nethertown to St Bees sea walls is an approximately 3.63-kilometre-long sea defence comprising a glacial slope variously protected and unprotected along its length. The slope fronts directly onto the beach which comprises gently sloping shingle beds at the foreshore leading to a wave cut terrace with outcropping sandstone dipping toward the wave cut terrace. At the high mileage end of the hard-pitching defence there is an unprotected section of exposed headland followed by a stepped concrete and rock armour defence.

It is proposed to reduce the height of the cliff by approximately 1m by removing material, this will reduce the risk of material falling onto the beach potentially endangering the public and the risk of material falling down the cutting slope onto the track. It is also proposed to repair the existing stepped concrete and rock armour defence to the north of the unprotected section. This involves concrete repairs, the removal of the existing rock armour, which has proven to be ineffective and has been dispersed across the beach by wave action, and the installation of new rock armour.

To avoid third party land loss there will be 55ln.m of rock armour installed at the north of the defence from the concrete stepped pitching to the car park.
The works are planned to start on 14.10.19 and are planned to conclude on 13.12.19. The daily working times will be dictated by the high and low tidal times, which in turn will be dependent on the actual start date on site. As a guide we will aim to work a 6 hour shift.
