Project description
Project title
Cumbria Coastal Activities Centre Slipway
Project background
Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners have developed a project to construct and run a Coastal Activities Centre on the Wellington Car Park at West Strand, Whitehaven.
The Centre is to provide suitable equipment storage for sailing, kayaking and canoeing equipment alongside toilet, changing and shower facilties in addition to classroom and laboratory space for groups and institutions, flexible multi-use spaces for hire, a small quantity of office space, and bed and breakfast style accommodation.
A planning application for the full scheme has been submitted via the Commissioners' Community Interest Company (CIC) to Copeland Borough Council, with this Marine Licence application submitted to cover the slipway component of the scheme which facilitates access from the Activity Centre building to the beach and water. A location plan L(00)001 - Site Location Plan_(Rev P1) is provided to assist with positioning the application within the wider harbour context.
Programme of works
Consenting of the scheme is in progress, with a view to having secured the necessary consents in late summer 2019. As the consents are secured a preferred contractor will be appointed with a project timeline that seeks to commence the slipway construction during Autumn 2019.
