Project description

CBC2 W30150 Parton - Harrington Sea Walls No.5 (157998)
CBC2 W30150 Parton - Harrington Sea Walls No.5 is a 1.3km section coastal defence located between
Parton and Harrington stations in Cumbria. The northern extremity of the site is approximately 0.5km to the south of Harrington.
The defence is formed from a combination of masonry pitching, concrete toe protection, concrete buttresses and rock armour protecting the railway line. The line is very close to the edge of the defence, less than 2m in some sections.
A survey undertaken has identified a number of defects with the defences. These include:
- Evidence of erosion & scour on the concrete toe
- Unprotected lengths of sea wall

Preventative works are required to prevent further damage to the defences from undermining and erosion by wave action.
The project’s aim is to repair the existing sea defences to prevent further erosion and ensure the continued stability of the railway.
The purpose of this application is to allow the works to improve the stability & asset life of this section of sea defence to be undertaken.
The works are proposed to start on 06.05.2019 and to complete on 31.07.2019 -subject to MMO licence in place. If we can get the MMO licence to be issued from 01.04.2019, we would prefer this as the start date.
The daily working times will be dictated by the high and low tidal times, which in turn will be dependent on the actual start date on site. As a guide, the contractor is proposing to work a 5 hour AM shift, and a 5 hour PM shift.
The works are proposed to be completed within 63 days, however the licence is dated until 31/03/2024 in order to allow for any unexpected major delays.
