Project description
Project title
CBC1 W630675 Calder Viaduct and Approaches (145932)
Project background
River Calder Viaduct and Approaches is a Category 5 estuarial defence. The defence protects River Calder
Viaduct CBC1, 165 and an adjacent steel footbridge. The defence comprises of sandstone and concrete
pitching, gabion baskets between the south abutment and southern pier; sandstone pitching and concrete
slab between the north abutment and northern pier. There is concrete toe protection and rock armour around both piers and a concrete invert between the two bridge piers on the centre span. On the north pier, a steel sheet pile wall with rock armour forming a training wall protecting the north pier. There is significant under cutting/ scour action on the concrete invert on the centre span of Calder Viaduct which required repair works to minimise and delay further deterioration to the invert. The concrete slab between the north abutment and northern pier is eroding.
The project’s aim is to repair the existing defences to prevent further erosion and ensure the continued stability of the railway.
