Devonshire Dock Quay
BAE Systems’ site at Barrow-in-Furness is to be the subject of a major facilities investment programme over the next 10 years, known as the Site Redevelopment Programme (SRP). This represents a £300-plus million investment into Barrow Shipyard, which is an enabler to the build, test and commissioning of a new Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear (SSBN) Class Submarine that will enter into service in 2028.

The construction of the new facilities as part of the SRP and the construction of the remaining five Astute class submarines will need to take place concurrently. The works under the SRP commenced in 2015 and are due to be completed by 2025. To accommodate the new SSBN Class, new infrastructure as well as refurbishment of existing buildings is required within Barrow Shipyard.

There are 32 separate projects required as part of the SRP. Since the proposed SRP comprises a number of projects to be implemented over different time periods, sufficient design information is not available for all projects to be consented under a single application. As a result, applications are being made for individual projects in line with the design and implementation programme. This application relates to the Devonshire Dock Quay (DDQ) element of the SRP, specifically the marine construction activities which are licensable by the MMO.

It is proposed that the works will start in July 2018 with site establishment, although significant works in the quay area are not anticipated to commence until late 2018. The completion date for DDQ is currently scheduled for August 2021 but it is proposed to add an additional 12 months to the licence period in case of any delays/programme changes.
