Project background

Dungeness B is a nuclear power station located on the South coast of Kent (see Figure 1.1).
The Dungeness Foreland is an accretionary build-up of beach deposits (shingle) on top of marine deposits (silt and fine sediment), producing the largest shingle feature in Britain. As a result a large area of the surrounding land is designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), a Special Protection Area (SPA) or a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) (see Figure 1.2).
Electricity generation by Dungeness B Power Station is supported by the abstraction and discharge of water from and to the English Channel under authorisation from the EA. This water is used for cooling purposes on a number of different systems that either directly or indirectly support electricity generation. As the water is abstracted from the sea through intakes that protrude from the sea floor, sediment is entrained in the flow and settles out in areas of low energy flow- most notably the cooling water forebay and diffuser, and the cooling water drumscreen chambers. These require regular routine maintenance and de-silting activities to ensure clean water is continually supplied for cooling purposes to the plant on site. These activities are low risk and minor in nature and previous activities that may have an environmental impact (however negligible) have been discussed with the EA prior to commencement
