Drumscreen Maintenance
Project background
Hinkley Point B Nuclear Power Station (PS) is located in Bridgwater Bay, Somerset, on the south west coast of England. The PS has a cooling water (CW) system which draws in and discharges sea water back to sea. The cooling water system is critical to maintain nuclear safety and as such the Station carries out routine outages to ensure reliable operation.
Part of the cooling water intake system comprises of 4 drumscreens. These drumscreens are located inshore within the Station boundary. They are under tidal influence due to the inlet tunnel leading under the station boundary and sea wall and out to the inlet which is approximately 650m away. One of these drumscreens is due its 3 yearly routine inspection and overhaul. The drumscreen chamber has been isolated under permit MLA/2016/0005/1 and the chamber is dry and free of seawater.
