Project description

Barrow Offshore Wind Farm (OWF) Export Cable Repair and Remediation
The Barrow OWF is located approximately 8 km from the Cumbrian coast, in north-west England. It consists of 30 x 3MW turbines, giving a total project capacity of 90 MW. There is a single, 26km export cable from the site which makes landfall at Heysham and an offshore substation. Offshore construction of the project started in May 2005, with the site officially opened in September 2006.

Transmission Capital Barrow OFTO Ltd was awarded a transmission licence and took ownership of the OFTO assets (offshore substation, export cable, onshore cable and onshore substation) on 27 September 2011.

See attached document (TCP Barrow Cable Supporting Env Info 261114 v0.5) for full details
The proposed works include;
• 5 x cable repair events, with associated jacking-up; and
• 10 x cable remediation events (via jetting).

Cable repair events are required when a cable fault or failure is detected by the Barrow OWF protection system. This section of the export cable will be recovered following de-burial operations where required. A new section of cable will be jointed to the cut, exposed end of the existing export cable and re-burial will subsequently be carried out via jetting.

Cable remediation events are required when lengths of the export cable have become exposed due to natural sediment transport processes. Cable re-burial will be carried out via jetting. These events will most likely be subject to pre- and post-cable inspection surveys.
