Project title
Rock armour maintenance work at Caldy Golf Club
Project description
Up until the late 1980's the Caldy Golf Club's coastal frontage comprised of undefended clay cliffs. The toe of the cliffs was very susceptible to erosion by wave action and led to progressive failure of the cliff face.
Rock armour protection was introduced at the toe of the cliffs in 1988 together with work to re-grade the cliff face. Further works were undertaken in 1993 to complete the frontage protection.
Since 1993 the Golf Club have carried out regular inspections of the cliff and rock armour protection and as a consequence undertaken minor maintenance work in the form of re-packing the existing rock in 1999, 2003 and 2007.
The proposed works aim to restore the revetment to its original profile by re-configuring the existing material and importing new bedstone and armourstone, together with any repairs to underlying geotextiles and adjacent structures.
The principal work items are as follows;
Supply and lay new geotextile membrane,
Import and place approximately 1550t of 3-5t rock armour pieces,
Import and place approximately 600t of 150mm to 300mm bedstone,
Re-pack existing rock as required,
Remove rocks that have migrated seaward and replace in the revetment,
Undertake maintenance and or reinstatement work to the slipway if any damage is caused during the works. Any repair work necessary would be subject to approval of a method statement prepared by the contractor which would address the appropriateness of materials used and the timing of it's use e.g. any concrete or proprietary epoxy repair material would have to be suitable for marine conditions, generally quick drying whilst the tide is out and have a suitable resistance to abrasion etc.
All landward storage areas and access routes will be reinstated to a standard at least equivalent to that originally encountered.
