Clovelly pumping station - emergency support
The sewage pumping station at Lower Clovelly is owned by South West Water. The pumping station is located at the base of the cliff on a cobble beach. The pumping station is believed to be above the MHWS level. A team has visited the site today after reports of erosion of the beach material. There has been significant amount of cobbles removed which has undermined the foundations of the pumping station and caused a breach in the sewer pipeline causing sewage to discharge onto the beach. There is also an oil tank adjacent to the beach which is not the property of South West Water, but is also experiencing undermining and these emergency works would also encompass this tank. The emergency works are to fill dump bags with beach material and locate these at the top of the beach adjacent to the pumping station and oil tank in order to provide temporary protection. The sewer pipeline can be quickly re-instated by undertaking an electro-fusion repair. A plastic coupler is placed around the broken plastic pipeline with electrical contacts in the collar. Power is then connected to these contacts which causes the plastic to fuse together. The beach material will then be replaced around the pipeline. No concrete or any other material will be used in this emergency repair, but this repair is necessary in order to stop the sewage flow onto the beach.
