Project title
Porth Promenade - Beach Ramp Improvements
Project description
Porth is situated on the edge of Newquay in Cornwall. Porth Promenade is owned by Cornwall Council, a coastal protection authority. This project aims to improve an existing beach access ramp from the promenade and is part of a larger project to strengthen and improve this coastal asset. The ramp is used by the public and school groups and is currently very difficult to use, due to its 1 in 4 gradient, narrow width, uneven surface and low handrail. The project aims to improve the ramp with a wider, shallower 1 in 12 ramp being constructed, with even concrete surfacing and properly designed DDA compliant handrails. This new ramp will extend 2.2m onto the bedrock on the beach, beyond the current promenade boundary. In addition it would be desirable to add a level landing area (5m long x 2m wide) for wheelchair users to turn around on. This landing is a 'wishlist' item, subject to funding and is not within the current tender documents. The landing is described for completeness, in case it is added at a later date. THIS LICENCE APPLICATION ONLY APPLIES TO THE RAMP EXTENSION AND OPTIONAL LANDING AREA, VALUED AT £7,000 WITH A ONE WEEK CONSTRUCTION PERIOD.
The ramp works are part funded by Environment Agency, Flood Defence Grant in Aid funding (2012/13) and also by Cornwall Council Flood Alleviation funding, Porth Residents Association and Treviglas Secondary School. The project was granted planning permission on 23 October 2013 and the contract is due to be awarded at end December 2013, with a start date of early February 2014.
The scheme has enormous support locally and has gathered momentum and funding since inception in 2009.
The cost of works to construct the ramp extension and optional landing is £7,000 and is estimated to take one week to construct.
