Project description

Tracer Studies
Compliance with microbial standards in the revised Bathing Water Directive (2006) is a legal requirement for EU member states. This is to be achieved through the design and application of a ‘programmes of measures’ as set out in the Water Framework Directive (2000) which defines bathing and shellfish harvesting waters as ‘protected areas’ (Annex 4). United Utilities has initiated a series of environmental studies designed to strengthen the evidence-base needed to underpin the design of strategies intended to deliver further improvement in bathing and shellfish water quality in North West England. This application for a series of microbial and dye tracer release studies over one year period is designed to provide credible data on: (i) connectivity between potential microbial sources and receptor sites; (ii) dilution of the tracer during transit to the receptor; and (iii) dispersion coefficients in the near-shore marine environment. This data resource will be used to calibrate coastal hydrodynamic models used to inform integrated water quality improvement strategies.
